About this event

Biographies:

Dr. Martin Leung is widely recognized as a classical pianist and as an influential performer in the introduction and development of video game soundtracks as a performing art. Since 2004 his work has transformed countless listeners into performers worldwide and "started a very interesting internet phenomenon" (Project Coe). He has performed as soloist and on concert series and education programs on 5 continents. He has soloed with the Leipzig Academic Orchestra, Canada's Saskatoon, Regina, and Sudbury symphonies, the Pittsburgh Symphony and others, working with Horst Förster, Victor Sawa, Lucas Richman, Arthur B. Rubinstein, Carl St. Clair, Tito Muñoz, and Peter Fournier. He has played at the Los Angeles International Liszt Winners Concert (1998, 2000, 2016 Zoltán Rozsnyai Memorial Prize), American Liszt Society Festival, Pianofest in the Hamptons, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and major game conventions in Leipzig and Brazil. Martin holds music degrees from CIM (Paul Schenly, Daniel Shapiro), Yale (Claude Frank), and USC (D.M.A., Stewart Gordon).

Andrew Moses is a composer, clarinetist, and installation artist living in Los Angeles. As a clarinetist, he has performed as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Ensemble and in chamber settings with iPalpiti Artists International, Curtis’ 20/21 Ensemble, and the Arcana New Music Ensemble. His 2017 performance as part of the Green Umbrella series with the LA Phil New Music Ensemble of an original composition for clarinet and chamber orchestra, conducted by John Adams, was described as "intricate in its orchestral interaction and coloration..." (San Francisco Classical Voice) and "reaching an audience in a compellingly direct way" (Mark Swed, LA Times), while his clarinet playing was described as "astonishing" (ibid). He is a winner of the Young Musicians’ Foundation National Concerto Competition, the Midland-Odessa Symphony National Young Artist Competition, the Torrance Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and the Beverly Hills National Auditions. A recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award, he has been featured twice on NPR’s “From the Top” and thrice as part of “Sunday’s Live” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Andrew was clarinetist in Bright Sheng’s “Intimacy of Creativity” festival in Hong Kong (2019); and he has participated in four seasons as clarinetist in the Yellow Barn Young Artist Program. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with several orchestras, performing as concerto soloist in the Walt Disney Concert Hall first at the age of 11. His recording of Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata No. 2 can be heard in Guillermo del Toro’s 2022 film “Nightmare Alley.” He is a clarinet student of Margaret Thornhill.

As a composer, Andrew’s work has been premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the International Contemporary Ensemble, wild Up, the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, Toolbox Percussion, and by the Mivos, Argus, Calder, and Zora string quartets. His work has been featured as part of the Ojai Music Festival, the LA Phil’s Green Umbrella subscription series, the LA Phil’s Noon-to-Midnight Festival, the Hear Now Music Festival, Los Angeles’ Next on Grand Festival, the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival, the Yellow Barn Young Artist Program, and the Valencia International Performance Academy. Andrew was a Nancy and Barry Sanders’ Composer Fellow with the LA Phil 2013-2016; and he studied composition as Anthony B. Creamer III Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music (BM). He is currently completing a commission for Oliver Herbert and Toolbox Percussion to be premiered in Hong Kong in April 2023, as well as a piece for solo bass clarinet for the Curtis Institute’s 2024 Centenary Commissioning Initiative. Also an installation artist—using digital signal processing, analog feedback networks, machine learning, and sizable physical constructions—Andrew graduated with an MFA in Art and Technology (concentration: the Center for Integrated Media) from the California Institute of the Arts in winter 2022. The California Senate recognized Andrew’s contributions to the local arts and presented him with the “Making a Difference Award.”
