Restorative Practices 101 is a two-part training for K-12 arts educators, teaching artists, and dance studio owners/teachers.

Dance New Jersey invites K-12 arts teachers, teaching artists, and dance studio owners/teachers to attend Restorative Practices 101, a two-part professional development training with Creative Praxis, on Tuesday, May 17th, and Tuesday, May 24th from 5-7PM EST. FREE for current Dance New Jersey members (https://www.dancenewjersey.org/join-our-community) and the Young Audiences of New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania community. Registration required. Zoom links will be emailed separately. This two-part training offers participants an understanding of restorative practice, including the two primary pillars; building community and repairing harm. The session will cover topics such as the connection continuum (manifestations of empathy and shame and the impact of systemic oppression), the social discipline window framework, affective statements, processes for repairing harm, and creating intentional spaces for building community.This Restorative Practices 101 training will utilize Creative Praxis’ anti-racist and trauma-informed framework for participants to gain knowledge, skills, tools, and strategies for creating restorative practices in both personal and professional learning spaces, specifically with young people and the community members. Participants will be engaged through movement, experiential activities, small and large group discussions, visual art-making, song, and role-play.For this training, participants will need the following items: <ul><li>A glass of water</li><li>Four pieces of white paper</li><li>Markers/crayons</li><li>A scarf/piece of fabric </li><li>Pen/pencil </li><li>Notepad for note-taking</li></ul>Note: A) During this training, participants will be asked to locate in their homes one item that brings them comfort, one item that connects them to their cultural identity, and one item that brings a sense of awe.B) Participants must attend training 1 on Tuesday, May 17th from 5-7PM as training 2 on Tuesday, May 24th is a continuation of training 1. Nia comes to this work with over 20 years of experience working with diverse youth and their communities around the world most impacted by systemic oppression. Nia is an international master trainer/facilitator, counselor, professional dancer/storyteller, teacher, and a therapeutic restorative community artist. Nia is certified in life coaching, grief therapy counseling, crisis intervention, the dialogic process, restorative practices, interactive mediation, restorative arts, trauma healing, trauma-informed spaces as well as de-escalation techniques.
