Remote Work 101: Finding and Acing a Remote Role

Women Who Code (WWCode) is an award-winning global nonprofit and 2016 Y Combinator company. This organization supports 80,000 members in their tech careers, every step of the way. We offer 1,500+ free technical trainings and events per year, a global leadership program, scholarships, and have networks in 20 countries and 60+ cities, with a 55 city waitlist for expansion. <p>A lot of us have been thrown into the deep end of remote work. Some of us have lost their jobs, and find themselves having to network and interview for jobs virtually. Those of us who are lucky enough to still have jobs will have to work from home for the foreseeable future. Naturally, we are all wondering: </p><ul><li>How can I maximize my chances of getting a job under the current circumstances?</li><li>How can I maintain my productivity while working from home?</li><li>How do I overcome this debilitating sense of isolation?</li></ul><p>To help answer these and other questions that you might have, we have brought together a panel of people with lots of experience working from home. </p><p></p><h1>Speakers: </h1>

<h3><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/malindacoler/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Malinda Coler - Founder, LessonsUp</a></h3><p>Malinda, Founder of <a href="http://www.lessonsup.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">LessonsUp</a>, is on a mission to close the generational tech gap by applying language-learning frameworks to tech lessons. She has been leading growth teams and operations at startups for ten years. She most recently co-founded <a href="https://askalmanac.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Almanac</a>, where she built a network of contributors to share knowledge in the fastest growing wiki for people in tech. She also scaled the customer success team at <a href="https://myaura.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Aura</a> (FinTech) from 10 to 200 associates across San Francisco and Mexico City to support the financially marginalized populations. Prior to that she scaled an on-demand network from 250 to 2,000 at iCracked.</p><h3><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/saba-elhilo/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Saba El-Hilo - Senior Data Engineer at MapBox</a></h3><p>Saba is a Senior Staff Data Engineer at <a href="https://www.mapbox.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mapbox</a> who specializes in building data-intensive applications, tooling and pipelines. She really enjoys tackling challenging scalability problems and working with complex datasets. She has been working remotely for US based companies for the past 5 years from beautiful British Columbia. Prior to this, Saba was a Senior Data Engineer at <a href="https://www.signalsciences.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Signal Sciences</a>. She has also held tech lead roles at <a href="https://www.splunk.com/en_us/about-splunk/acquisitions.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rocana</a> and <a href="https://hootsuite.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hootsuite</a>.  She obtained her BSc in Computer Science from Queens University, and her Masters from SFU.  </p><h3><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliaamosova/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Julia Amosova - Software Quality Engineer at Automattic</a></h3><p>Julia Amosova is a Software Quality Engineer at <a href="https://automattic.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Automattic</a>, a fully distributed company behind site-building, e-commerce and blogging services such as WordPress.com, Tumblr, and more.  Driven by user success, she takes pride in leading quality initiatives for the company's ecommerce platform WooCommerce. She is responsible for improving core product experience through test plans and strategies, automated end-to-end testing, issue triaging and advocating for quality culture. Outside of the virtual office, you can find Julia running in the park, reading and taking photos with a film camera.  </p><h3><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/malindacoler/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a></h3><p></p>
