About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

In March 2020, photographer, writer, and filmmaker Eugene Richards sought solace in Green-Wood after battling a severe case of COVID-19. Captivated by the Cemetery’s beauty, he spent years photographing its details and vistas across the seasons, creating lyrical images of snowbound headstones, grand mausoleums, intimate epitaphs, and the wear of time on all things.

Remembrance Garden: A Portrait of Green-Wood Cemetery chronicles Richards’ visits between April 2020 and September 2023. The book interweaves the names and dates inscribed on gravestones with Richards’ personal memories to create a poignant portrait of the Cemetery and its relationship with time and nature.

Join Richards in the Historic Chapel for a conversation with poet, essayist, and cultural critic David Levi Strauss. Richards will also share readings and images from Remembrance Garden and sign copies of the book.

Eugene Richards has had a 50+-year career as a freelance photographer and artist, authored 17 books, directed seven short films, and earned accolades including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Journalism Award, and the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award for Photographic Innovation.
