What are Relative Targets about? Relative Targets is nothing less than the reinvention of organizational performance systems – suitable for companies and not-for-profits of all kinds: It is a powerful and elegant social technology for every organization of 25 people or more.Relative Targets differs from other well-known approaches to performance systems in thatit scales naturally,it does not require constant training and external or internal support,it drives out coercion and fear,it makes annual target-setting and planning exercises superfluous, while dramatically increasing transparency and control,it simplifies reporting and improves complianceMost importantly: Relative Targets empower teams (or «cells») to act as highly responsible mini-enterprises. Pioneers of Relative Targets have operated this kind of performance system for decades, and have become undisputed leaders of their industries.

How to get going with Relative Targets? The Relative Targets Quick Start course is a great way to get acquainted with the approach. You can start employing Relative Targets in your organization at any time. One can go live with a Relative Targets performance system within a few months.

Where did Relative Targets originate? Niels Pflaeging started pioneering Relative Targets 20 years ago, when he joined the Beyond Budgeting Round Table as a director, in 2003. At the time, some high-performing companies like Handelsbanken, Toyota, Semco and Aldi were using Relative Targets with great success. Others, like Buurtzorg, would later follow. The BetaCodex Network white paper Making Performance Work from 2009 is testament to Niels’ ongoing research and client work around relative performance systems. In 2021, with dozens of consulting projects around performance systems under his belly, Niels decided to make Relative Targets more widely available as a free-to-use, open source social technology. Relative Targets is bound to revolutionize performance management and organizational leadership alike!
