About this event

Have you ever wondered what those bass in the Chattooga River were called? Is there another fish swimming in the Upstate besides trout? Join SCDNR, the Chattooga River Fly Shop, and South Carolina Native Fish Coalition for a full day of Redeye (Bartram's) Bass training.

The Redeye (Bartram's) Bass Fly Fishing Course is an advanced class for experienced anglers who already have their own rods, reels, waders, boots, and fishing packs and want to learn about one of South Carolina's coolest native bass. We will teach about what Redeye Bass are, how to catch them, what flies are helpful, and fishing techniques in the morning. After the presentation, we will try our hand at tying a few Redeye Bass flies courtesy of the Chattooga River Fly Shop and SC Native Fish Coalition. In the afternoon, we will break into groups and fish for Redeye (Bartram's) Bass in various locations in the Upstate of South Carolina.

Recommended equipment: 4-5 weight fly rods with a balanced reel and line or ultralight spinning equipment. Waders or wading boots and wet wade clothing. Fishing bag or vest.

Reminders:

What to bring: Dress is casual. Check the weather report and dress appropriately as you will be outside. Other items to consider bringing include hat, sunglasses, bug spray and water. Participants must bring their own equipment including rods, reels, waders if needed, and any additional fishing gear for a day of river fishing. Prior experience with your equipment and experience wading is mandatory for this course.

Please pack your own lunch and drinks.

Costs: The course is free of charge. (Fees for entrance to State Parks and county parks may still be applicable)

Clinics are held rain or shine unless hazardous weather occurs or river levels are too elevated to fish safely.

All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult.
