Following his six month residency at Growing Underground, a farm 33 metres underground in Clapham, Llew Watkins is presenting five sculptures in one of the uninhabited tunnels. This is a rare opportunity both to see Watkins' work as well as these extraordinary catacombs below London.
 
Because of the nature of the space we are taking six small groups down into the tunnels to see the work over the weekend at six different time slots. It's necessary to book in advance via eventbrite and please do so early as spaces are limited. Please also be aware that the tunnels are half a kilometre in length, therefore we will be walking some distance underground as a group.
 
Time slots are: Saturday 2.30 PM - 3.30 PM Saturday 4.00 PM - 5.00 PM Saturday 5.30 PM - 6.30 PM Sunday 12.00 PM - 1.00 PM Sunday 1.30 PM - 2.30 PM Sunday 3.00 PM - 4.00 PM
 
Since May 2016, Watkins has been developing Dressing up Bars, a speculative fiction narrative that presents the sprawling cultures of the Hemmed City, and a number of other intensely real but absent environments, as seen through the lens of his protagonist Emily. For Red Thread he presents five sculptures that explore in abstract form the landscapes of Dressing up Bars and the way they intersect with nine personas in his story. The large scale floor pieces present five critical junctures in his narrative, each an emotionally weighted encounter between two characters.
 
Using materials he can source freely in London - including papier-mâché, pigment and sand from the Thames - Watkins spends months creating delicate sculptures that are installed only for a few days before being dismantled. The exhibition will take the form of a guided tour - meeting above ground at the Growing Underground offices, Watkins will lead us to the tunnel where the sculptures are installed and give a short introduction to each in turn before allowing time to view the works on our own. Finally there will be a quick viewing of the remarkable studio he has been using since December and a chance to ask any questions.

Llew Watkins, b.1985, is a sculptor and writer based in Limehouse, London. His ongoing work Dressing up Bars draws on his practice as a sculptor, writer and model maker to explore a shifting world inspired by the celtic ogham alphabet, contemporary science fiction and communities based around the Buddhist principle of natural hierarchy.
Watkins has been a Buddhist practitioner for 15 years within the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. During this time, under the guidance of his teachers, he spent two and a half years in solitary meditation retreats in India and Wales. In April 2017 he finished a six month sculpture residency at Husk in Limehouse. In December 2017 he began a six month residency at Growing Underground in Clapham.
