Disability studies scholar Georgina Kleege will guide participants throughout  Recoding CripTech

Curated by Vanessa Chang and Lindsey D. Felt, Recoding CripTech reimagines enshrined notions of what a body can be or do through creative technologies, and how it can move, look, or communicate. As the term “crip” reclaims the word for disability culture and recognizes disability as a cultural and political identity, so too do artists hack technologies to dismantle barriers to access. By creating new kinds of social and sensory interactions with technology, these artists portend a crip aesthetic for media arts that honors the diversity of human bodies.Berkeley professor of English and disability studies scholar Georgina Kleege will guide participants throughout the exhibition with tactile and sensory aesthetic experiences with Tactile Explorations on Thursday, February 6, 6–9pm. As a consultant to art institutions around the world and author of More Than Meets the Eye: What Blindness Brings to Art (2018), Kleege has shown numerous audiences how to engage with artworks through non-visual senses.This free, all ages tour is limited to 12 participants. Detailed public transit and bicycle directions are available on Google Maps.DrivingFrom the NorthFollow 101 South across the Golden Gate Bridge. Turn right onto Scott Street. In a half mile, turn left onto Bush Street. In another half mile, turn right onto Gough Street. After one mile, turn left onto Fell Street and continue on 10th Street. Use the left lane to turn left onto Division Street. Turn left on to Brannan Street and SOMArts will be on the left.From the SouthTake 101 North to San Francisco. Continue to Bryant Street. Take Exit 433C for 9th Street toward the Civic Center. Continue on Bryant Street and use the right lane to turn slightly right onto Bryant Street. Take a sharp right onto 8th Street and then turn right onto Brannan Street. SOMArts will be on the right.From the EastTake I-80 West to San Francisco and continue across the Bay Bridge. Take Exit 1C toward Ninth Street/Civic Center and keep left at the fork. Follow signs for 8th Street and merge onto 8th Street. Turn right onto Brannan Street and SOMArts will be on the right.ParkingStreet parking is available (and usually plentiful after 6pm). Flat rate, uncovered lot parking is accessible at 935 Brannan at 8th St. A bike rack is available near the Main Entrance (down the driveway).
