About this event

Do you dream about eating healthy food you raised yourself? Are you tired of congestion, pollution and crime? Do you long to reconnect with nature? And do you wonder if the best way to realize these dreams is to become a Homesteader?

So where do you begin? There are many questions. What is rural living really like? Do I have to become totally independent and live off-grid? How much property do I need? How can I learn simple things like raising chickens for eggs, milking goats to make my own yoghurt and cheese? How much will it cost and is it all worth it? You can start to find out how you might realize your own, individual homesteading dream with a farm visit.

Tour and visit with a couple who moved from the Washington, DC area to rural Virginia. They now raise chickens, ducks, pigs, goats and rabbits. They will explain what you should consider before you “make the move.” They have seen neighbors who moved from urban areas be disappointed because they did not research and plan, and had unrealistic expectations about everything from keeping animals to making an income from the farm.

We have made the move, and within this first, three-hour visit, which will include a nice farm lunch, we will discuss some important considerations and, of course, visit with the animals.

This will be a serious and informative discussion period. Not a one size fits all presentation. Come prepared to discuss your own dreams and get some real answers. Because it is serious, we do not suggest children attend.
