Reading—A Measured Language: Proficiency Matters Workshop

Prerequisite: Attendance at an OPI Workshop (or refresher) within the last 5 years or pre-approval.

In this interactive workshop, we will explore reading proficiency through the lens of the Reading Proficiency Scales. Designed for language educators, assessors, and program coordinators, this session will provide an in-depth understanding of the ILR/ACTFL levels, from minimal comprehension of familiar material to professional level proficiency.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Differentiate between key levels of reading proficiency.
  • Identify text types and reading tasks appropriate for each level.
  • Design instructional and assessment activities to foster growth from one level to the next.

We will examine real-world examples of texts and tasks, discuss strategies for supporting learners at various proficiency stages, and analyze how factors such as vocabulary control, inference-making, and cultural knowledge impact reading comprehension.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will have actionable strategies and resources to enhance their teaching, develop targeted assessments, and promote students' progression toward advanced reading proficiency.
