Re-Authoring Masculinity

Marlo Pedrosois a clinical social worker in private practice at The Meeting Point in Jamaica Plain. He helps people integrate the wisdom of mind, heart, and body, with sensitivity to their cultural and historical experiences. His work includes special attention to gender in all its glorious permutations. He has taught mindfulness for years and loves to help people develop compassionate, embodied awareness. He is a single father of a young boy, a musician, and loves facilitating community gatherings and dialogues for transformation and fun.

Isaac Hunnewell & Marlo Pedroso

Men are facing unique challenges today. Some of those challenges may feel welcome, while some of them may feel threatening and frustrating. There is a struggle between what we would like to be as men and how we have been taught to be. We want to be good men, yet in our relationships and communities we often come up short, or worse, hurt those we love. As we look for role models of a new kind of masculinity, we find too often that men held up as models of success lack the integrity we are seeking. What do we do about this? 
Our Vision
To bring men of varied sexualities and races together to explore what we’ve learned about being a man from our families and society. What have we found valuable and worth preserving? What aspects do we struggle with and recognize as limiting to ourselves and the people in our lives? What does a 21st century masculinity look like? We believe that coming together we can begin to author and build a masculinity that will serve ourselves and the larger world and we invite you to join us. 
Workshop Details
This free, initial workshop, is intended for cis-men of any sexual orientation or race. We will explore these questions together using meditation, writing, dialogue, and physical practices. Our hope is to expand our knowledge of what men are wrestling with in their masculinity, recognizing our unique histories and shared experiences. 
Isaac Hunnewell is a master’s level mental health counselor who sees counseling as an opportunity to combine his academic work on masculinity, culture, and identity with the practical work of counseling men and boys. He is a bilingual school counselor (Spanish and English) and is curiously engaged in a variety of men’s work on the local and national level. His current work revolves around social-emotional learning, providing space for playful expression and self-discovery, and understanding how societal and family trauma impact human development. Outside this work, he enjoys biking, camping, Saturday morning English soccer, and a good New England IPA.
