Racism and Christian Nationalism

Welcome to our online event featuring Dr. Bradley Onishi, UCSB graduate, USF professor, author of "Preparing for War - THE EXTREMIST HISTORY OF WHITE CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM-AND WHAT COMES NEXT" and co-host of the podcast Straight White American Jesus. Dr. Onishi will be discussing the intersection of racism and Christian nationalism.

When we talk about Christian nationalism in the United States, it is imperative to talk about White Christian nationalism in order to understand why tens of millions of religious conservatives support Donald Trump and extremely right-wing policies on immigration, religious liberty, gun ownership, policing, and reproductive rights. The 2024 election will shape the United States for decades to come.

Christian nationalism, and White Christian nationalism specifically, is front and center in every aspect of the presidential race and politics (and more) today. But, what is it? Why has it become part of the cultural zeitgeist? And what makes it dangerous for all Americans? In this talk, Dr. Bradley Onishi will discuss the White supremacist dynamics of Christian nationalism and the ways Whiteness and Christian hegemony have led to a place where a growing number of Americans are calling for a post-constitutional America made in a theocratic image.

Zoom link will be supplied to attendees the day before the event.
