As we work to address racial inequities in our communities and our organizations, it is important to understand that racism is not primarily a problem of personal beliefs or biases. Racism has been part of American life for hundreds of years. Some of the inequities that we live with today were created and supported by federal policy.

In the US, there are long-standing and substantial wealth disparities by race. The typical White family has eight times the wealth of the typical Black family and five times the wealth of the typical Hispanic family. (2019 Survey of Consumer Finances)

The Racial Wealth Gap Learning Simulation is an interactive activity that helps people understand the connections between racial inequity, hunger, poverty, and wealth. It is a good first step for people who are just learning about racism, a support tool for those who want a deeper understanding of structural inequality, and a source of information for those who want to know the quantifiable economic impact of each policy that has widened today’s racial hunger, income, and wealth divides. Participants learn how federal policies created structural inequalities—property ownership and education are just two among many areas affected—and how these policies have impacted communities of color.
