As we work to address racial inequities in our communities and our organizations, it is important to understand that racism is not primarily a problem of personal beliefs or biases. Racism has been part of American life for hundreds of years. Some of the inequities that we live with today were created and supported by federal policy. <blockquote>In the US, there are long-standing and substantial wealth disparities by race. The typical White family has eight times the wealth of the typical Black family and five times the wealth of the typical Hispanic family. (<a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/disparities-in-wealth-by-race-and-ethnicity-in-the-2019-survey-of-consumer-finances-20200928.htm" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">2019 Survey of Consumer Finances</a>)</blockquote> <a href="https://www.bread.org/library/racial-wealth-gap-learning-simulation" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Racial Wealth Gap Learning Simulation</a> is an interactive activity that helps people understand the connections between racial inequity, hunger, poverty, and wealth. It is a good first step for people who are just learning about racism, a support tool for those who want a deeper understanding of structural inequality, and a source of information for those who want to know the quantifiable economic impact of each policy that has widened today’s racial hunger, income, and wealth divides. Participants learn how federal policies created structural inequalities—property ownership and education are just two among many areas affected—and how these policies have impacted communities of color. Join us for this eye-opening simulation and learn to bring a racial equity lens to your work. The simulation will be repeated four times:<ul><li>February 9, 11:30am-1:30pm ET</li><li>February 10, 10-noon ET</li><li>February 17, 10-noon ET</li><li>February 24, 10-noon ET </li></ul>Space is limited , so be sure to register early.

LaTrenda Leonard Sherrill will serve as the facilitator for this simulation. She has 12 years of experience in coalition-building, project management, and strategic planning. Most of her work centers on issues of equity in the criminal justice and education arena. She is the principal of Common Cause Consultants, an organizational consulting firm in the Pittsburgh region. LaTrenda has always worked to broaden access to opportunity in the Pittsburgh region and to incorporate a racial equity lens as she approaches every project. She has served as Deputy Chief of Education in the Office of Mayor William Peduto for the City of Pittsburgh, supported internal communications at GSK, served as a coach at the Department of Human Services, and early in her career, as a youth organizer for Focus on Renewal. In addition to her work experience, LaTrenda is the current Vice President for Trying Together, an early childhood advocacy organization. Her past board experience includes Partner4Work, Jeremiah’s Place, and the McKees Rocks Community Development Corporation. LaTrenda earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Science and Disorders from the University of Pittsburgh, and an MBA from Carlow University.
