Race Realities™ in Costa! June 17-24, 2024

Join us for an unforgettable retreat in the breathtaking coastal town of Cahuita at The Goddess Garden, an oasis of peace and nature on the Caribbean ocean side. Get ready to immerse yourself in a transformative experience like no other!

Our goal is to offer a safe and brave space for leaders from all backgrounds to participate in racial equity education, organizing, and strategy. Through critical thinking exercises, thought-provoking discussions, and challenging real life cases, together we will further explore the complexities of race on our society and its impact on our healing – mental and physical.

Our Race Realities™ retreat, founded by Dr. Deborah Stroman, will kick off on Monday, June 17, 2024. Over the course of several days, you will have the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, co-learn from renowned experts in the field, and gain valuable insights that will empower you to recharge and recommit to creating positive change in your own communities.

What to expect?

During your stay, you will also have the chance to heal, relax, and rejuvenate in the stunning natural surroundings of southern Costa Rica. From pristine beaches to lush rainforests, this oasis offers the perfect backdrop for self-reflection and personal growth. Our Race Realities™ Costa is designed to leverage the strengths and skills of all attendees to ensure a professional, engaging, and fun experience! Note: To ensure full engagement, intimacy, and value, this retreat is limited to 20 participants.

Note: A Race Realities Costa retreat for men only is scheduled for July 12-19, 2024.

Why Healing in Costa Rica?

Defined as the "rich coast," Costa Rica has become a haven for people seeking peace or a simple life (aka pura vida). Race Realities Costa offers registrants many ways to heal including: Art - drawing, coloring, painting; Exercise - walk, run, zumba, dance, horseback riding; Expressive Art or Music - drumming, song; Games - cards, charades, board games, chess, checkers; and Journaling/Writing; Meditation. And more! Come to the land of beauty and rest for healing.

All-Inclusive Pricing - $2500

  • Seven nights stay at The Goddess Garden (Less than a 10 minute walk to ocean)
  • Transportation (attendees arrive at the San Jose airport and will be transported to The Goddess Garden)
  • Three delicious meals per day, including a variety of vegetarian and ayurveda fare as well as chicken or fish

The instructional team is experienced, talented, and inspired to guide Race Realties Costa. As a co-learning space, we will facilitate conversations and an equity examination that maximizes the cohort's best practices, interests, lessons learned, and vision for a healed world.

With registration, attendees accept the terms and conditions:

1. Booking policy: Payments are electronic only in US dollars. To book your single occupancy* reservation and reserve your package, we require an initial $625 non-refundable deposit, payable electronically through Eventbrite. We require the final payment before June 1, 2024. All booking fees paid are non-transferable.

2. Cancellation policy: If one must cancel their reservation, we will not refund your deposit. Cancellations made 30 days before the check-in date will receive a 100% refund minus the total first installment payment. Emergencies are handled on a case-by-case basis. In case of a no-show with no communication, you will receive no refund. If one leaves Race Realities Costa before their reserved stay is over, no full or partial refunds will be credited. In this case, paid fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. The guest leaving is responsible for transportation back to San Jose.

What happens each day?

Daily Agenda (subject to change): Morning - Yoga (optional), Breakfast, and Race Realities I. Afternoon - Lunch, Race Realities II, Taraji Time - Swahili word for hope; purposeful conversation circle(s), and a Healing Activity. Evening - Dinner, Race Realities III, and Healing Activity.

What does Healing look like for Race Realities Costa?

We provide customized activities that serves each registrant's definition of good health or "making one whole." Options available include: Beach (chill, fire, walk, or jog), Dance, Fireside Chat, Massage, Plant medicine, Silence, Tours (adventure, nature, or history) or Yoga.

What about the details on the retreat center?

Please visit The Goddess Garden website (https://thegoddessgarden.com/ ) to learn more about this oasis including the awesome cuisine, spa, rooms, and facility.Internet service is available (who wants to be online though?!) and WhatsApp is recommended for texts/calls back to the USA.

Are their any travel requirements?

Citizens of the USA may enter Costa Rica with a passport that remains valid at least 6 months after your travel date. Before you leave, please make a copy of your passport, which you will need to carry with you at all times. The passport allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days.

What about money?

The US Dollar is widely accepted in CR, so exchanging US Dollars to CR Colones is not necessary. Smaller denominations of $20 or less are easiest to cash. There are ATM machines and banks in town. The Units Plus app is helpful for foreign travel. It includes currency and temp functions.

What about personal belongings?

Dress comfortably including planning for wet weather, cool evenings, and the very hot sun! Each room is provided with a safety box at no charge. The safety box is big enough to hold a laptop. The Goddess Garden is not responsible for any stolen personal belongings on the premises.

Is Covid-19 a concern?

Health and safety are #1 priority. However, CR has announced as of April 1, 2022, they ended the Covid-19 measures for entry into the country. In addition, the government has lifted its most significant restrictions such as travelers do not need a vaccination. Masks are optional.
