Refactoring Mount Doom - Tackling Legacy Code

A lot of us are familiar with that nightmare where you are try to get to your destination, and keeping moving, trying different things, but for various reasons, you never arrive.

Some refactorings are like that - you extract methods, name constants, increase readability… In short, you spend a lot of time cleaning up - but you never get to a good place with the code. In this talk, I will show you how to refactor for the right reasons and the right methods to use your time efficiently. Let’s make working with that code easier in the future.

Discipline in code

When we first learn to code we focus on learning syntax and how to design programs. When we join a team of professional programmers, we also learn about team practices like XP and pair programming, and tools like revision control systems. But rarely do we stop to learn about our own personal techniques and habits. These techniques and habits are what we’re referring to when we talk about discipline in code.

How disciplined are you in your daily work? From ‘check in early and often’ to ‘refactor mercilessly’, there’s a whole array of patterns you can follow to be a more disciplined and a more effective programmer. This talk details many of these patterns and the philosophy behind them.
