In this hands-on workshop, students will learn why and how qualitative methods can be useful in mixed methods projects. We will focus on two foundational and highly adaptable methods – participant observation and semi-structured interviews – explaining what they are, the situations in which they are useful and important, how they can be best applied. We will also learn how to find useful academic resources at different stages of a project. In addition to learning these skills and how to apply them, students will have opportunities to practice them via interactive exercises within the workshop. Completing this workshop will provide students with the theoretical and practical training they need to more effectively and purposefully use qualitative methods in their work.
