Want to start learning or improve your Python coding skills? Attend one of our spring 2019 semester workshops to learn the basics and some intermediate skills.
Hosts Adam Lavely and Patrick Dudas will cover a variety of tips, tools, and tricks to provide useful skills for improving research using Python. These interactive workshops will provide an environment that opens up questions to benefit the attendee's research or interests.
Anyone interested in workshops 2, 3, or 4 should have basic knowledge of Python, which they can gain by attending Workshop 1.

Workshop 1: Intro to Python and Jupyter
These workshops will cover several beginner level topics to get people interested in programming and capable of using the Jupyter platform with Python. Attendees do not need to install any applications, as Jupyter runs in your browser and is tied to your Penn State user account. Topics will range from accessing your free Jupyter account, how to use Jupyter, what is a variable, working with variables, and basic programming concepts.

Workshop 2: Reading Data and Making Plots
Attendees can learn more about how to improve their overall experience with Python, including leveraging built-in libraries, reading in and plotting data, and saving different types of files with different specifications.

Workshop 3: Speeding Up Python
Big data doesn’t have to slow down your code. In this workshop, Lavely and Dudas will explore different ways to optimize your Python code for processing large data sets, using built-in libraries and tools available in Python.

Workshop 4: Web Scraping
Attendees can get an overview of how to use Python to make a call to an API to make use of publicly available data. Lavely and Dudas will walk through how to scrape Twitter data and ingest this into Python in real time.

Patrick M. Dudas, Ph.D., has experience with teaching classes and running workshops in programming and coding. He has been a developer for over 20 years and enjoys helping others understand coding. Patrick currently supports the Eberly College of Science, Huck Institute of Life Science, and Institute for CyberScience in developing code for data visualizations.

Adam W. Lavely, Ph.D., is currently teaching parallel programming in CSE 597 and developed and taught the ICS-ACI training seminars.  Adam provides advanced technical services for the Institute for CyberScience and is a computational scientist for projects funded by the NSF and NASA in Aerospace Engineering.
