Python 1: The Basics (Spring 2022)

BayGeo is a non-profit organization created to help lead, mobilize, and engage the local geo-community in the Bay Area. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a technology used to create maps and perform spatial analysis for almost every discipline and industry. Our community includes GIS professionals, data designers, developers, artists, as well as people in biology, urban planning, transportation, utilities, marketing, nature resources, public health, and many more.BayGeo includes several local groups:GeoMeetup,GIS Education Center,SCGIS Bay Area Chapter,SF Estuary Geospatial Workgroup, andSouth BayGeo.BayGeo initiatives include: BayGeo's Education Workgroup, BayGeo's Mapping for Social Justice, BayGeo's Open Data Workgroup, and BayGeo's Young GeoProfessionals.

Learn the basics of Python, a general purpose programming language. This workshop focuses on the use of Python with geospatial data and maps

<h3>Learning Objectives</h3><p>By completing this workshop, students will gain a basic understanding of computer programming using python.  Understand python data types and how they are used in GIS and data analysis.  Create your own custom geoprocessing script and convert it into a script tool in ArcGIS Pro.</p><h3>Lesson Plan</h3><p><strong>Session 1 </strong></p><ul><li>Intro to programming concepts </li><li>How computers work, RAM vs. HD memory </li><li>How code is interpreted in Python </li><li>Introduce concepts: interpreters, IDEs, command line, Jupyter notebooks </li><li>Pseudo code and thinking like a computer</li><li>Python data types </li><li>Simple programming examples, creating variables, manipulating numbers and text </li><li>Demonstration of simple GIS uses in ArcGIS Pro Python window, show how to look up Python format from ArcGIS Help </li><li>Show Python documentation web page and how to look up info </li><li>Use Jupyter notebooks to write Python code </li></ul><p><strong>Session 2 </strong></p><ul><li>Recap data types and concepts from previous session </li><li>Introduce concept of looping </li><li>In class work with looping in Jupyter notebook </li><li>Intro to writing and executing scripts </li></ul><p><strong>Session 3 </strong></p><ul><li>Continue with looping </li><li>Introduce feature layers for selecting data </li><li>Defining custom functions </li><li>In class work with feature layers and functions </li><li>Students start working on a Python script as a project<strong> </strong></li></ul><p><strong>Session 4 </strong></p><ul><li>Intro to converting stand-alone scripts into script tools </li><li>Have students convert a Python script into a script tool </li><li>Review workshop topics </li><li>Sneak peek of material covered in "Python Intermediate" workshop </li></ul><h3>This Workshop Meets Four Times</h3><ul><li><strong>Wednesday, February 23</strong> (6:00 - 8:30 p.m.)</li><li><strong>Wednesday, March 2</strong> (6:00 - 8:30 p.m.)</li><li><strong>Wednesday, March 9</strong> (6:00 - 8:00 p.m.)</li><li><strong>Wednesday, March 16</strong> (6:00 - 8:00 p.m.)</li></ul><h3>Software</h3><p>A temporary license of ArcGIS Pro 2.9.1 (along with a temporary ArcGIS Online account) will be provided to registered students for use during this workshop, and a few weeks thereafter.</p><h3>The Instructor</h3><p>Ian Conroy is a native San Franciscan who hasn't strayed too far from the Bay Area.  He studied GIS at UC Santa Cruz and San Francisco State University with a few seasons snowboarding in the Lake Tahoe area in between.  </p><p>He's been working with GIS technology in some form for over 10 years.  He started out in the habitat restoration field, working on restoring native habitats in the Bay Area and became the crew GPS expert.  From there he transitioned into working in the utilities industry, using GIS for desktop analysis of utility infrastructure for public safety. </p><p>Ian enjoys the challenge of computer programming and uses python daily in his work to automate recurring tasks and provide script tools to colleagues to streamline workflows.  </p><p>Besides programming for GIS, Ian also enjoys programming sounds with his bandmates, currently via DropBox.</p><h3></h3>
