Join our host Alameda climate leader Jonathan DeLong (Executive Director, REAP Climate Center) and local climate leaders to hear about their pathways into climate work, their experiences along the way, and their visions for the future.

Our panel includes:

Megan Arnett - Executive Director Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry

With a PhD in neuroscience, Megan is one of many in the Green Chemistry community who comes from an interdisciplinary background. As such, Megan is constantly learning new aspects of green chemistry as the executive director of the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry at UC Berkeley, where she works directly with industry partners to identify safer alternatives to chemicals in their products or processes. Megan is lead instructor for several green chemistry courses at UC Berkeley, and runs an internship program and research center in collaboration with the USDA Bioproducts Research Institute.

Nathan Bickart - Director, Watershed Restoration Programs, Urban Tilth
Nathan designs curriculum for and teaches Urban Tilth's Basins of Relations Training Program, a paid apprenticeship which supports young Richmond residents as they learn about watershed stewardship, build relationships with land, and care for the natural spaces around them. He founded and continues to support UT's Watershed Restoration Field Crew, which works year-round performing restorative care of West County waterways, and, since 2023, supports UT’s Water Conservation Programming, which enhances climate resiliency in Richmond. Nathan is an ecologist and educator who has worked in the North Richmond community since his graduation from UC Berkeley in 2013. Nathan believes deeply in the power of local, relationship-based restoration to heal what ails us, and believes that humans belong by the river. When he's not working at UT, Nathan performs as a professional pianist/musician with a variety of Bay Area-based bands, mostly recently as part of the duo project DADÉ.

Aniya Butler - Youth vs Apocalypse

At the age of 8, Aniya turned to writing as a way to question the contradictions in the world around her. As a teen, her writing and spoken-word artistry has earned her national acclaim and profiles in Seventeen and Teen Vogue magazines. These days she directs her writing and organizational talents to speaking up about climate justice.

Butler’s journey to climate activism began in September 2019, when Youth Vs. Apocalypse held a climate march that rallied thousands of young people to San Francisco. She was 13. Today she continues to support the organization as their Cultural and Relational Strategist as well as leading their Hip Hop & Climate Justice Program.

Andrea Dunlap - Creative Director - Rain Industries

Andrea Dunlap wanted to be a National Geographic photographer when she grew up, but that being an in-house photographer and filmmaker working alongside engineers has been a pretty great backup choice.

“My greatest joy is working within a team to mitigate climate change in ways that defy convention.”

Andrea specializes in telling stories about ambitious projects, translating technical things into english and sharing insights and discoveries with the world. She's created materials ranging from full documentaries to captivating still imagery + informative captions that have appeared in media outlets worldwide. She believes in the power of stories to build strong, inclusive cultures while also broadcasting achievements through photos, video, design, illustration and technical writing.

Tanvi Dutta Gupta - Editorial Fellow Bay Nature Institute

Tanvi Dutta Gupta studies ecology and science communication at Stanford University, with a focus on applying research towards international conservation, stewardship, and sustainability. Her research has centred on exploring emerging conservation techniques, like eDNA and rapid mass spectrometry, human-nature interfaces, and environmental management. Her writing explores how research can be applied towards conservation efforts, especially for environmental justice issues. She believes in integrating research with effective writing and communication to translate and amplify its impact.

Dr Elliott White Jr - Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability

Elliott White Jr. is an Assistant Professor of Earth System Science in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. He is a coastal ecosystem scientist who leverages his domain expertise in wetland sciences with interdisciplinary training in remote sensing and ecohydrology to investigate climate change related challenges on coastal socio-environmental systems (cSES). Elliott has research on all three US coasts and has expanded internationally to include Bolivia, The Gambia, and Canada. Collaborators in his research include academics, non-profits, community-based organizations, and municipal departments. At Stanford, he is an affiliate of the Center for Comparative Studies on Race and Ethnicity and a Center Fellow, by courtesy, of the Woods Institute for the Environment. Elliott has a PhD in Environmental Engineering Sciences from the University of Florida (2019) and a BS in Biology and Animal Ecology from Iowa State University (2015).
