PROJECT SAPPHIRE

Shawn Michael Glover is an up and coming artist from the small town of Orangeburg, South Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Studio, with an emphasis in Graphic Design, from The University of South Carolina[2014]. He currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina where he has been for three years. Shawn is currently employed as a Graphic Artist for Lionel Trains and also works as an Arts Advisor for the Non-profit Playing For Others. He is currently in the final stages of graduate school persing his Graduated Certifical to teach K-12 Art Education.From a young age Shawn has always had an interest in the Arts, be it visual or performing. This love for variety pushed Shawn to explore and work in multiple mediums of art throughout school. Always looking togain more knowledge and understanding he decided to make Art his carrier. Currently Shawn's work includes Graphic Design, Photography, Illustration, and a variety offine Art Mediums.Shawn is always looking for ways to start conversation, and inspire creativity of thought, through his work. In his mind, the Arts are food for our scenes, they are tools used to help us navigate the world we live.

This exhibition explores the Sapphire Caricature and the role it has played in shaping the culture of today. This caricature portrays black women as rude, loud, malicious, stubborn, and overbearing. This is also known as the Angry Black Woman popularized in the cinema and on television. The Sapphire Caricature is a harsh portrayal of african american women, but it is more than that; it is a social control mechanism that is employed to punish black women who violate the societal norms that encourage them to be passive, servile, non-threatening, and unseen.
Through the creation of these ten pieces, I shine light on ten african american women in my own family and tell their truths to the world.

I believe that when given an opportunity to share the spotlight we should jump at the opportunity. This being said I decided to include a performance piece to this event. I have invited Musician/Vocalist Emil Foster to perform a 30 min. set of his choosing inspire by the story and message of the visual art. Emil will be accompanied by Curtis Keyes Jr. on keys along with Shayla St. James, Dexter Jordan, and Keon Sunkins on background vocals.

Throughout the event I have also invited Musician Chandler Robinson to fill the space with music and set the energy of the event.

All attendees will be required to check in prior to entering the space with their eventbrite link or by signing in at the table. Attendees have the option of giving a $5.00 donation to help support the art and artist involved with the event.[exact cash or cash app] All attendees over the age of 21 who contribute a donation will receive two complimentary drink tickets for the mimosa bar [ID required]. The bar will feature champaign along with a variety of different juices. The Mimosa bar will be open while supplies last.
Attendees are welcome to also BYOB [champaign, beer, cider]
