This workshop will touch on the K-12 educational interpreter -- common practices, professional courtesies, boundaries and responsibilities, and the applicability of the RID Code of Professional Conduct tenets in various educational settings and situation

Ethical dilemmas in educational interpreting will be presented and discussed, along with how the tenets of the Code of Professional Conduct (RID, EIPA) may apply. Interpreters will discuss the structure and flexibility of our profession, broaden their knowledge regarding the diversity of situations they may encounter, and analyze and apply the ethical dilemma decision making process to their everyday interpreting situations.

Time will be reserved for questions and feedback. You will score yourselves through an ethics quiz.

Learning Objectives:

Interpreters will learn to analyze and apply

  • The seven tenets of the Code of Professional Conduct (EIPA,RID) to various situations they may encounter.

  • School setting policies and procedures as they affect the Agency Educational Interpreter: Appearance, professional courtesy, do's and don'ts, etc.

  • Interpreter/student boundaries, responsibilities, professional guidelines (EIPA)

Presented by Debra Intravaia. Ms. Intravaia studied American Sign Language Interpreting in Colorado where she earned her A.A.S. degree in Sign Language Interpreting in 2005, passed the EIPA in 2007 and earned her state certification in Educational Interpreting.

She was employed full time with the Jefferson County Public school system for 12 years and as an interpreter for the Denver Archdiocese and The City of Lakewood, Colorado. Recently she relocated to the Orlando, Florida area, where she has provided services in a variety of community and educational settings.

Ms. Intravaia currently serves as SignTalk Florida’s Director, Professional Relations, where she is responsible for quality assurance and quality improvement.
