About this event

  • 6 hours

Pro Dance Oxford, supported by Dancin' Oxford, is thrilled to be presenting this workshop led by Richard Chappell Dance (an opportunity to delve into your choreographic and self-producing practice) for local & regionally-based dance artists in Oxford on Sunday 14th July 2024.

Revolving around Richard Chappell Dance’s choreographic and producing practices, this workshop follows RCD's performance of Hot House at the Oxford Playhouse in March this year.

The day will start with a two-hour contemporary dance workshop exploring the dance and choreographic practices of Richard Chappell. Richard will lead a warm-up class drawing from his experiences in dance practice and training for leading UK and International companies and institutions. The class will be accessible and inclusive. You can read more about Richard's class content here - https://www.richardchappelldance.co.uk/company-class#.

The second part of the workshop will explore the choreographic process of Richard Chappell Dance's recent production Hot House. Richard will share RCD's practices in improvisation, movement generation and dramaturgy.

The final part of the workshop will be an open discussion facilitated by Richard focusing on self-producing for artist's in 2024. We will explore pressing questions such as portfolio building, freelance momentum, developing partnerships and regional support structures.

Workshop Eligibility

Due to space restrictions, there are only 15 spaces available for the workshop, which will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. The workshop is suitable for professional / advanced level dance artists local to Oxford or to the region, working in any style or genre. The workshop has been designed for early to mid-career dance artists. Should you have any queries about eligibility, please email RCD Producer Clare Parker on clare@richardchappelldance.co.uk.

When and where to arrive:

The Old Fire Station has three entrances, we would advise you to use the entrance on George Street which will take you directly to the reception area.

We would recommend arriving about 30 minutes before the workshop start time. There are changing rooms on site, a member of Pro Dance Oxford will be around should you need anything, and the Arts at Old Fire Station Café do an amazing cup of coffee!

Suggestions for the Lunch Break:

Oxford has an incredible independent food and drink community including the wonderful Damascus Rose Kitchen who are based out of the Arts at The Old Fire Station Café (The falafel wrap is our favourite!)

Other local hotspots that are all a short walk from the theatre are:

The Handle Bar (Coffee and Food) on St Michaels Street

Alpha Bar (Salad and Sandwiches) in Oxford’s Covered Market

The Art Café (Coffee and Food) opposite The Westgate

The Gloucester Green Market also has an amazing range of street food stalls and is open Wednesday-Saturday - it also is on the doorstep of The Old Fire Station if you use the Gallery Entrance!
