Printmaking Workshop: Blocks and Flowers

The Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago is a site for rigorous inquiry and exchange that encourages the examination of complex issues through the lens of art objects and artistic practice. Through strong community and scholarly partnerships, the Museum incorporates diverse ideas, identities, and experiences into its exhibitions and collections, academic initiatives, and public programming. The Smart first opened in 1974. Admission is always free.

This two-part printmaking workshop presented by the Smart Museum of Art in collaboration with <A HREF="https://www.spudnikpress.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Spudnik Press</A> draws from images found at the margins of urban life.

<H2>PART I</H2>
Thursday, May 9, 6–8 pm Smart Museum of Art The University of Chicago 5550 S. Greenwood Avenue Part I features a tour of <A HREF="https://smartmuseum.uchicago.edu/exhibitions/solidary-and-solitary/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Solidary & Solitary</A>, led by curator Jennifer Carty, and an in-depth discussion about new work created for the exhibition by Chicago-based artists Bethany Collins and Amanda Williams. Following the discussion, Spudnik Press executive director Angee Lennard will lead a hands-on block-printing and monotype workshop, teaching participants how to print on a wooden block and how to print using unconventional materials found in the city, like flowers, weeds, rocks, and asphalt.  
<H2>PART II</H2>
Saturday, May 11, 10am–noon <A HREF="https://www.spudnikpress.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Spudnik Press</A> 1821 W Hubbard St, Suite 302 Chicago, IL 60622 Part II of the program delves further into the printmaking process. Printmaker Angee Lennard will discuss how Spudnik Press collaborated with artist Amanda Williams to create Cadastral Shaking (Chicago v1) using blind debossment and screen and relief printing. Then, using the blocks and floral arrangements made in the first part of the workshop, participants will make their own prints to take home.
