About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

PRIMX is a dance theater production that bridges research, choreography, and community. It is a collaborative effort between Ani/MalayaWorks, a mother-daughter dance company that has now evolved into a dance collective centering on stories of the global south. They collaborate with Puerto Rican-Dominican dance artist Marcel Santiago Marcelino, with steadfast support from his father, Jorge Santiago Arce, a cultural bearer of Puerto Rican music and traditions. PRIMX questions the lasting effects of Spanish and US colonialism and the legacies of resistance throughout our histories. How has colonialism shaped our society's view on gender expression within our folkloric art forms? How do we honor our cultural traditions while maintaining a contemporary and critical lens? Through the dynamic weaving of contemporary movement and Puerto Rican and Philippine Folk Dances, this production invites us all to enter a space of collective joy, reflection, and healing, especially within the troubling realities we all face. This project is supported by MAPfund 2022 and BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance.
