Meet new people and explore topics relevant to EA and Jewish tradition! We will have a presentation followed by a group discussion.

A presentation and discussion on the topic: Is EA Just Utilitarianism? Three Approaches to Reconciling Effective Altruism with Other Pursuits. We'll explore questions such as: <ol><li>I﻿s effective altruism compatible with caring deeply about and pursuing other projects such as volunteering at a local nursing home or donaitng money to your synagogue? How about non-moral pursuits like relaxing on the beach? </li><li>What is the relationship between effective altruism and moral philosophy? How does Peter Singer’s famous thought experiment of a drowning child relate to effective altruism? </li><li>In practice, how do we delineate the boundaries of our moral obligations?</li></ol>If there’s interest, this will be the first part of a series of discussions on Moral Obligation in Philosophy, Judaism, and Effective Altruism, exploring how (if at all) the frameworks of normative ethics, Jewish tradition, and effective altruism try to answer the question “to what extent are we obligated to help others?”
