Description

Preparing to Publish in Today's Market

With a manuscript in hand, it can be difficult to figure out whether to aim for a traditional New York publishing deal or to go the self-publishing route.

  • Are New York deals more lucrative?

  • Is the technology involved in self-publishing difficult to learn?

  • What about marketing?

In this one-day workshop, find out the pros and cons of each approach and be able to make informed, intelligent decisions about your writing career while avoiding the more common pitfalls.

In the first half of the day, we'll discuss traditional publishing, query letters that jump out of the slush pile, and best practices for finding an agent. Learn which online tools will keep you up to date with market changes.

In the second half, during the self-publishing discussion, we review formatting, publishing tools, applications and platforms (including Kindle, iBooks, Nook, Kobo and Google Play), as well as where to find today’s best editors and designers to get your books noticed, read and reviewed.

You'll leave equipped for publishing success no matter which track you take.

About the instructor:

Rachael Herron, M.F.A., is the internationally bestselling author of three literary novels from Penguin (most recently, Splinters of Light, March 2015), the five book Cypress Hollow romance series and the memoir, A Life in Stitches. She has taught workshops and seminars on the craft of writing and the writing life from the M.F.A. program at Seton Hill, Penn., to the Melbourne Book Festival and all points in between. Her areas of expertise include novel revision, character development, career growth, money management for writers and, her favorite, keeping students excited and motivated when the state of publishing is doomed (as it is falsely rumored to be every six weeks or so).
