Introduction to the Retrofit lab and the Theme of the Workshop

Peter Newman is the Professor of Sustainability at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. Peter is an academic who has written 20 books and over 350 papers on sustainable cities with a global reputation and has worked to deliver his ideas in all levels of government. Peter has worked in local government as an elected councillor in Fremantle, in Western Australia’s state government as an advisor to three Premiers and in the Australian Government on the Board of Infrastructure Australia and the Prime Minister’s Cities Reference Group. He is the Co-ordinating Lead Author for the UN’s IPCC on Transport. In 2014 he was awarded an Order of Australia for his contributions to urban design and sustainable transport, particularly for his work in saving and rebuilding Perth’s rail system. In 2018/19 he was the WA Scientist of the Year. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Springer journal Sustainable Earth.

With over 25 years of experience spanning diverse and complex urban infrastructure projects worldwide, Luke Rowlinson has built a career characterized by leadership and innovation. His roles have included project manager, contract administrator, project architect, and design lead for initiatives that drive urban renewal, precinct development, and community infrastructure. Recognised with awards for his professional contributions, Luke partners with clients to co-design built forms that not only meet their objectives but also align with the principles of a circular economy. His recent projects reflect ambitions for zero waste, regeneration of natural habitat, adaptive reuse, and significant social impact outcomes.

Precincts: The Tragedy of the Commons, Decarbonisation and Natural Systems

Professor Wei Pan is Head of Department of Civil Engineering of The University of Hong Kong, where he is also Executive Director of Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development, and Director of MiCLab and NetZeroLab. Professor Pan was Acting Executive Vice-President (Administration and Finance), Associate Vice-President (Research and GBA), and Associate Dean of Engineering (Masters) of HKU. Professor Pan is a renowned scholar in sustainable construction engineering and management, with interest covering modular integrated construction (MiC), smart construction, sustainable infrastructure, zero carbon, and lifecycle assessment. He has attracted over HK$120 million research funding and authored over 360 publications, a Top 1% scholar worldwide by citations by Clarivate Analytics and a World’s Top 2% scientist released by Stanford University.

Tatjana Hinson is a highly experienced and respected sustainability professional with over 23 years of expertise in project delivery and compliance within the fields of sustainability and environmental management. At WSP, Tatjana oversees all aspects of sustainability in Western Australia, including climate change and resilience, decarbonisation, life cycle assessments, infrastructure ratings and building ratings.
Tatjana is known for being a passionate, process-driven, and people-focused leader with extensive project coordination and program management skills. She has successfully managed numerous large-scale, iconic infrastructure projects across various business environments, encompassing environmental management, sustainability, approvals, and compliance.
Throughout her career, Tatjana has made significant positive contributions at every stage of the project lifecycle, from bid management and planning to development, execution, and operations.

Director of Curtin Institute for Energy Transition, Curtin University. Professor Ashworth is a renowned expert in energy, communication, stakeholder engagement, and technology assessment. She has researched public attitudes towards climate and energy technologies, including wind, carbon capture and storage (CCS), solar photovoltaic, storage, geothermal and hydrogen, for almost two decades. An accomplished speaker and educator, she actively promotes energy literacy globally and contributes to policy briefings and educational events. Prior to joining Curtin University, Professor Ashworth was the Director of the Andrew N. Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership, and Chair in Sustainable Energy Futures at The University of Queensland (UQ). She was also Chair of the Queensland Hydrogen Taskforce and is a member of CSIRO Hydrogen Mission Advisory Board. Professor Ashworth brings over thirty years’ experience working in a range of senior management, consulting and research roles.
