About this event

Practical Project Management for Scientists

This nano course is taught virtually over three days using the Zoom platform. Each day’s session is approximately 3 hours and has a break.

Dates:

Monday, August 17, 3 - 6 PM

Wednesday, August 19, 3 - 6 PM

Friday, August 21, 12 - 3 PM (note earlier time)

Project management is essentially the art and science of meeting your objectives on time and on budget. Project management experience is highly valued in professional organizations, and believe it or not, you probably use many of those same skills as you design, execute, troubleshoot and complete your experiments.

There’s a whole language for project management and in this program we’ll teach you that language, how it relates to the kinds of activities and skills you do every day, and how to describe your experiences and successes using that language.

The practical utility for you right now will be:

  • Better control of your research project
  • More accurate assessment of how long your project will take
  • Ability to negotiate with your PI to have clear common set of objectives
  • Better ability to anticipate what could go wrong and how to best prepare for that

The practical benefits for your career are:

  • The ability to demonstrate your knowledge of project management using your own research as examples with accomplishments
  • Demonstration that you recognize the important of meeting deadlines and working within budgets (which is very important to professional organizations)
  • The ability to distinguish yourself from your competition for good jobs

SciPhD will schedule a followup session approximately 4 months after completion of the program for an open session to review how you have been able to apply what you’ve learned, and ensure that you get the most utility out of your new project management knowledge as possible.
