About this event

It sounds almost too good to be true - free books for children in Union County, Arkansas!

To support childhood literacy and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, the United Way of Union County will host Power of the Purse at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, at the Granite Club in El Dorado. This event and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library were so special to Alexis! Join us as we continue to honor her and grow this wonderful program!

The Power of the Purse will feature a fashion show from local merchants, a silent auction featuring designer purses and other items, a dessert auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres, adult beverages, and entertainment.

Individual tickets for the event are $40. In addition, tickets for a designer purse raffle are also available for $5 each. Tickets can be purchased online at eventbrite.com.

Thanks to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and the United Way of Union County, children under the age of 5 can now have access to their own library. A book is mailed to each enrolled child every month until their fifth birthday. Currently, almost 1,500 children are enrolled in the program. We sent more than 17,600 books to 1,844 Union County kids in 2023. To enroll more children, we must raise funds to continue to advance the program!

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit United Way of Union County’s early literacy initiative – the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The book program is offered to families at no cost. Parents can register their eligible child/children online at www.imaginationlibrary.com.

To purchase tickets, donate to the silent or dessert auction, or get more information, please contact Tyler Turner at director@unitedwayunioncounty.com or 870.862.4903.

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton's  Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East  Tennessee, USA. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among her  county's preschool children and their families by providing them with  the gift of a specially selected book each month.  By mailing high  quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted  children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can  create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books,  regardless of their family's income.

Dolly's Imagination Library became so popular that  the program is now available for replication to  any community that is willing to partner with her to support it  locally. Union County is proud to partner with this program to promote reading in South Arkansas.

The United Way of Union County sponsors this free book program for county residents age birth to five.       Visit www.imaginationlibrary.com to sign up.
