Poverty Simulation Experience

Brief description: Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) promotes a greater understanding of poverty. During the simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self-sufficiency on Social Security. Student Experience: A live-action simulation to role-play lives of low-income families. Understand poverty through an experiential setting, empower students to interact with leaders from the campus and community, and to view poverty as a reality.
Objectives:
By the end of this simulation, students will be able to:

<LI>Describe how poverty affects individuals, families, and systems of care in the United States.</LI>
<LI>Contribute as a team member in their defined role as part of the simulation.</LI>
<LI>Identify through critical reflection the influence of personal biases and values of working with diverse individuals and constituencies, especially those living in poverty.</LI>
<LI>Discuss the importance of engaging in practices that advance social and economic justice.</LI>
