Postal 360: Service, Cost, Pricing

What We DoThe OIG plays a key role in maintaining the integrity and accountability of America’s postal service, its revenue and assets, and its employees. With almost $68 billion in revenue, the Postal Service is at the core of a more than $1.3 trillion mailing industry that employs more than 8 million people. The nearly 487,000 employees of the Postal Service compose one of the largest civilian federal workforce in the country.Delivering more than 155.4 billion pieces of mail yearly to 154 million delivery points and operating 31,000 postal facilities, America’s postal system is one of the government’s most trusted entities. The USPS OIG, an independent agency within the Postal Service under the general supervision of nine presidentially appointed governors, employs more than 1,125 auditors, investigators, and professional support personnel stationed in more than 100 offices to meet the challenge of preserving this trust. Our MissionThe OIG achieves its mission of helping maintain confidence in the postal system and improving the Postal Service’s bottom line through independent audits and investigations. Audits of postal programs and operations help to determine whether the programs and operations are efficient and cost-effective. Investigations help prevent and detect fraud, waste, and misconduct and have a deterrent effect on postal crimes.

United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General

The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General is hosting Postal 360 – a discussion forum designed to explore essential aspects of the Postal Service and its operations.

The three themes of this event will be service, cost, and pricing. The service module will examine how the Postal Service’s performance standards have changed over the last decade, whether the measuring of those standards is adequate, and what kind of service changes mailers are requesting. On cost, the Postal Service’s product unit costs have changed dramatically since PAEA was passed in 2006. We will explore what factors may be driving these changes. Finally, the pricing module will discuss the question: “Where next for postal pricing?” Panelists from different stakeholder groups will bring their perspectives to all of these cornerstone issues and attendees are encouraged to contribute to the discussion.
