About this event

The Artists Gallery (TAG) of Los Angeles is pleased to announce Positive Exposure: Socal Asian American Art, on view May 1-25, 2024, in TAG’s Sky Gallery. The exhibition celebrates the contemporary and intergenerational voices of the Asian American and Pacific Islander creative community and coincides with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Through painting, sculpture, photography and video, this group exhibition will highlight the personal, visual language reflective of each artist’s heritage and engagement with western art traditions, especially found in Southern California.

On Saturday, May 4, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM, the community and media are invited to attend an opening reception for this new exhibition. Many of the participating artists will be in attendance to discuss their work and involvement. The reception is free to attend.

Curated by Shirley Asano Guldimann, Joyce Hayashi, and Sophia Quach McCabe, Positive Exposure will feature twenty-five artworks, including video installations to represent and promote Asian American artists from Southern California. According to the 2020 census, Asian Americans make up 15% of California’s population, creating a vibrantly alive and creative cultural community. Positive Exposure aims to showcase this community’s unique expressive visual language, reflective of diverse heritage and contemporary western culture and art traditions. The exhibition is made possible through sponsorships from Project Space and The Artists Gallery.

In addition to meeting participating artists at the reception, guests can also meet the exhibition’s curators - all notable members of the community. Sophia Quach McCabe, Ph.D. is an art historian, curator, consultant, and lecturer of Art History at California State University in Long Beach. Joyce Hayashi is a contributing artist and creative consultant with Project Space in DTLA Arts District. Shirley Asano Guldimann is an esteemed member of TAG, artist, writer, and curator.

“The artists and curators of Positive Exposure are delighted and honored to have the vital and innovative art of the Asian American community exhibited at TAG gallery during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month,” states Shirley Guldimann, exhibition curator.
