Puget Sound Pilots (PSP) are highly skilled, specially trained ship captains who board oil tankers, cargo vessels and cruise ships to guide them safely through Puget Sound waters. For more than 100 years, PSP members have ensured against the loss of lives, loss of or damage to property and vessels, and protected the marine environment by maintaining efficient and competent pilotage service on Washington's inland waters within the Puget Sound Pilotage District. Captain David W. Melin was born and raised in Seattle, and presently lives in University Place with his wife, Kathryn. They raised three boys, two serve in the Navy. In 2014, Captain Melin retired from the Navy after 30 years of service on seven ships, including Captain of the Destroyer USS STETHEM, and the Cruiser, USS PRINCETON. He was posted in the Pentagon twice. As a second career, Captain Melin became a Maritime Pilot and initially piloted a large container ship in Alaska before becoming a Puget Sound Pilot in 2018.
