About this event

  • 2 hours

Three Notch’d Road performs selections from Polyhymnia, Caduceatrix, et Panegyrica, Michael Praetorius' magnum opus published in 1615, at the very beginning of the Baroque era. Fusing the ornate innovations of Italian Catholics like Giovanni Gabrielli with the simplicity and singability of the German Lutheran chorale, Praetorius masterfully creates an immersive, interactive musical experience unlike any other.

Featuring liturgical works appropriate to Eastertide, and led by guest artistic program director Jeremy Ward, the consort of instruments (violin, viola, sackbutt, cello, organ) will answer a consort of voices: soprano Sheila Dietrich, countertenor Nathan Medley, tenor Ben Geier, and bass Ian Pomerantz.

**Pre-concert lecture by Susan Treacy, professor of music emerita, 30 minutes before each performance

**Please join us after the concert for a reception in the Parish Hall

Named for a colonial route through central Virginia, Three Notch’d Road: The Virginia Baroque Ensemble specializes in the performance of historical repertoires from both sides of the Atlantic. Our musicianship is founded on a vigorous historical approach, offering little-known music of the baroque as well as incisive performances of well-known favorites. In addition to our subscription series, Three Notch’d Road musicians perform in schools throughout central Virginia.
