Come and learn how to write poetry! An accessible and safe space to hear and learn from professional poets and to discover the poet in you. Hosted by Canal Laureate Roy McFarlane and Brighton's own AFLO. The Poet, this workshop is great for anyone with an interest in creative writing. Suitable for ages 16 and up.It will be a relaxed, friendly session open to all levels with plenty of snacks and breaks. So do feel free to join even if you are just getting started!A ticket for the workshop comes with a free pass to the poetry cafe in the evening, and there will be an opportunity for workshop attendees to perform if they choose.

R﻿oy McFarlaneRoy McFarlane is a Poet, Playwright and former Youth &amp; Community Worker born in Birmingham of Jamaican parentage, living in Brighton. He’s the National Canal Laureate and former Birmingham Poet Laureate, Starbucks Poet in Residence and is the co-editor of Celebrate Wha? Ten Black British Poets from the Midlands (Smokestack, 2011).His debut collection, Beginning With Your Last Breath, (Nine Arches Press 2016) was followed by The Healing Next Time, (Nine Arches Press 2018) shortlisted for the Ted Hughes award and longlisted for the Jhalak Prize. And his greatly anticipated third collection Living by Troubled Waters is out now with Nine Arches Press.

A﻿FLO. the PoetAFLO. the poet is an award-winning Brighton-based spoken word artist, activist and academic who embraces creative expression to disrupt the status quo and inspire social change. AFLO. uses poetry as a vehicle to address hard-hitting topics, particularly racism and mental health, primarily speaking from her lived experiences. AFLO. has performed at various protests, festivals and events, in addition to offering workshops to encourage others to engage in creative expression as a means of personal as well as societal healing. AFLO. is one of Brighton Dome’s in-house artists for 23/24 and is a significant force directing change in Brighton’s creative scenes.

<h1>Hosted in association with Brighton CCA</h1>Brighton CCA is a centre for contemporary arts, open to all, hosting world class exhibitions, projects, commissions and research by international emerging and established artists.L﻿ocationT﻿he event will be hosted at the Sallis Benney Theatre inside Brighton CCA, at 58-67 Grand Parade, Brighton BN2 0JY.P﻿lease use the entrance on Kingswood Street.

AccessBrighton CCA and The University of Brighton are committed to being open and accessible to all. Brighton CCA has step-free access throughout its public spaces. The venue is wheelchair accessible.There are two accessible parking bays available by the side entrance to the quad.
