The Way The Salt Falls

The Way The Salt Falls is about failing and trying to do better on a personal and political level. The poems are written both from Tracy's perspective and from those of other peoples': a visual artist, a refugee, an elderly man, Jacob from the book of Genesis, a cancer survivor, a bureaucrat. They are all people: people who survived sexual assault, who struggle to live up to their parents' wishes, who have been addicted to drugs, who have a relationship like a cracked dam, who have lived without a home, who just want to do better.

"The Way the Salt Falls sings in the spirit of an evolving lyric, its decidedly Midwest demanor propelling the inhaitants we meet throught episodes of morality and curiosity. If 'time is a trick candle,' as the voice of one poem suggests, Mishkin is immersed in the magic, offering a cast of everyday people who are anything but ordinary and sure to surprise." -Mitchell L.H. Douglas

"Lamentation, wry courage, and moments of stark truth permeate The Way the Salt Falls. Tracy Mishkin's peotry is generous, bueatifully craved, vividly imagined. It compels us to 'navigate the past. And breath'— despite global heartbreak and personal loss. When the world leaves us raw, Mishkin's breathtaking lyrical percision ('my smile like silver trout/ leaping sweet') concoles. We urgently need the humanity here—'when the heart opens/ does not close.'"- Alessandra Lynch
