Pocket Con 2018

Elgin Bokari T. Smith aka L O Kari is an Uptown Chicago Dj, Activist, Visual and Performing Artist from St Louis Missouri. Born in 87 L O Kari was heavily influenced by the soulful sounds of RnB, Jazz, Hip Hop, Gospel and alternative rock. While attending Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis Missouri Elgin discovered he had an ear for music and begun creating music on Piano and guitar while added a unique flavor. Now known as L O Kari, Elgin has performed in and out of state ranging from New York, St. Louis, Ohio, Seattle, South Korea, Japan, and all over the Chicago land area. Has shared stages with the likes of Bone Thugs and Harmony, Ruby ibarra, The Terra Godz, Saba, Da Brat, Clark Airlines, Mega Ran, Bop Alloy, No Name Gypsy, DJ Esco, Young Chop, Lil Crazed, Rebel Diaz, Twista, Chingy just to name a few.L O Kari style is very smooth and transformative. Blending mixes of Hip hop, RnB, to Electronic, Trap and EDM. Some of his influences include, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Nujabes, Linkin Park, Joe Hisaishi, LORN, and Prince. What most notable about his style his ability to adapt to the vibe of the audience he's serving. Elgin also give back to his community as a Teaching Artist, and President of activist, artist collective Elephant Rebellion.

Pocket Con is a free single day convention for Chicago youth brought to you by a partnership between the Chicago Public Library, Freewrite and LOKari Productions. It focuses on work by artists of color, particularly African American authors and artists, as well as comics with a primary character who is Black. Pocket Con also features work in the comic genre by other underrepresented groups, such as women, Latinos, LGBTQs, and other minorities. We have a strong belief in Indie comics and publishing, and welcome small press and self published authors as well as those involved in related forms of expression and interest, such as webcomics, animation, small-budget film-making, video game design, and zines. Our mission for this event is primarily to promote literacy using the graphic novel format, reflect on the history of race and gender portrayal in comics and film, and introduce characters, writers and authors who have a different voice than the primarily white, primarily male, primarily straight characters written by generations of comic authors (themselves primarily white, straight, and male). We would also like to empower young writers and artists by introducing them to the collaborative process that is comic creation, and encourage them to produce and submit work of their own for contests at the con.
