A half-day farmer workshop on how to use sap analysis to grow healthy and highly productive plants

About this event

The Paicines Ranch Learning Center is excited to welcome Scott Wall and Jenny Garley of NEW AGE Laboratories in leading a half-day farmer workshop on June 28!

Sap analysis is a powerful tool for growers wanting to accurately gauge their crop health and nutritional needs during the growing season. This workshop will provide the foundational understanding on how to use sap analysis to grow healthy and highly productive plants.

Scott Wall and Jenny Garley are the President and the Chief Science Officer at New Age Laboratories - one of only three labs offering sap analysis in the US. They will share what they have learned through years of experience and from providing sap analysis as a service to growers around the world.

Content will include explanation of what sap analysis is, how it differs from tissue analysis, and how nutrient mobility in plants allows us to identify nutrient deficiencies well before physical symptoms arise. Participants will learn about the synergies and antagonism between anions and cations, macro- and micro-nutrients, and how sap tests help to determine if their plants are using nitrogen efficiently. In addition to basic sampling protocols, the session will also include a review of sap analysis reports so that everyone can hone their skills in interpreting the results and what fertility adjustments would be reasonable to consider.

The session will conclude with Q&A, followed by a delicious, locally-sourced lunch by Paicines Chef Carlos after the workshop concludes.

LIVESTREAM: We're excited to be able to offer a Livestream option for those who would like to attend this workshop virtually. Access details will be sent to registered attendees. We will also send out a recording of the workshop to everyone afterwards.

Scott Wall is the Founder, CEO, and President of New Age/Landmark, Inc NEW AGE Laboratories located in South Haven, Michigan. Scott has spent the past thirty years immersed in analytical chemistry and microbiology associated with agriculture, food safety, and environmental science. Over the past eight years since recovering from acute leukemia Scott has dedicated significant resources of NEW AGE Laboratories towards investigating fruit and vegetable nutrient density and its correlation with plant sap nutrient content. Scott focuses the lab on providing growers actionable information through plant sap analysis to improve plant nutrition, crop yields, and producer return on investment. Scott has a B.S. in Natural Resource Management – University of Michigan and M.S. Food Safety – Michigan State University.

Jenny Garley is the Chief Science Officer at NEW AGE Laboratories. Jenny is from, and located, in the Monterey Bay area, in California, and grew up in agriculture. She received her Master of Food Science & Technology degree from Oregon State University in conjunction with University of Alaska Fairbanks. This dual degree was brought forth by being awarded an Alaska Industrial Sea Grant Fellowship which involved both universities.

Jenny has been immersed in plant sap analysis for 8 years. Initially training and working with Nova Crop Control, a sap lab in The Netherlands, then moved to NEW AGE Labs in 2020. NEW AGE Labs was founded in 1998, as an environmental lab, quickly moved into the agriculture space, and has been providing plant sap analyses for over 6 years. Jenny oversees the teaching and training of sap analysis for both growers and agricultural companies throughout the US, Mexico, and South America.
