BRN - Elective
From the rare and fragrant Fraser fir of the highest mountain elevations to the common white pine found throughout our region, the beautiful evergreen members of Pinaceae enrich our Appalachian Mountains. This class covers species identification of the Pine family members found in western North Carolina and their natural history as well as human uses of the pine family and their importance in our mountain ecosystems.
This program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle, yet uneven terrain, and dress appropriately for the weather.
Carlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits.
