DAVID MONAHAN

'Picturing Migration' is a conference featuring artists, researchers, journalists and writers, all who have had a role in visualizing recent moments of  migration in Ireland and abroad.
The conference is the final part in a series of events and presentations around the exhibition "Beyond Leaving" which runs till March 26th at the National Photographic Archive, Temple Bar, Dublin.  This conference seeks to acknowledge and discuss representations made by speakers which bring into the light other instances of migration as well as those already discussed in Monahan’s current work.
 Speakers include Melanie Friend, photographer/artist and educator, Sarah Maria Griffin, author and project collaborator, Rory O'Neill, artist/researcher, Ciara Kenny, curator and editor of Irish Abroad/Generation Emigration (Irish Times) and Vukasin Nedelikovic artist/resercher (Asylum Archive). It will be hosted by David Monahan, Dr Justin Carville and Dr Mark Curran and will take place in the National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street.
 
Melanie Friend worked as a photojournalist and freelance print/radio reporter until moving into long-term projects in the 1990s. In the past twenty years she has worked as a documentary photographer/artist, producing exhibitions (shown internationally), and four solo publications (<A HREF="http://www.melaniefriend.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.melaniefriend.com</A>). Several of these works used a combination of sound and still image. Much of her work has focused directly or indirectly on conflict/war. She is Reader in Photography in the School of Media, Film & Music.
Melanie will discuss the long process of making Border Country (2003-07) and her encounters with the immigration detainees whose voices are so crucial to the project. Border Country was first shown at Belfast Exposed in 2007 (curator: Karen Downey) and then toured as a solo exhibition, culminating in a show at Gallery 44, Toronto in 2010. In May 2017 it will be exhibited in Athens. 
 
Vukasin Nedeljkovic is a PHD candidate at Dublin Institute of Technology. He initiated multidisciplinary project Asylum Archive.
Asylum Archive is a platform open for dialogue and discussion inclusive to individuals who have experienced a sense of sociological/geographical ‘displacement’, social trauma and violence. It is an act of solidarity to bring a different perspective on the life of people who came to Ireland to seek protection. 
Asylum Archive’s objective is to collaborate with asylum seekers, artists, academics, civil society activists and immigration lawyers, amongst others, with a view to creating an interactive documentary cross-platform online resource, critically foregrounding accounts of exile, displacement, trauma and memory.

Rory O’Neill completed a degree in photography at Griffith College Dublin. Followed by a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Ulster in Belfast and a Post-Grad in Anthropology from Maynooth University. O’Neill’s photography output has primarily focused itself with documenting the asylum process in Ireland and the consequences of institutional living. His research and practice has drawn him into human rights advocacy where he continues to document the continuing journey of integration for people who have sought refuge in Ireland.  His work has been shown both nationally and internationally.
 
Sarah Maria Griffin is a writer from Dublin, Ireland. Her first novel, Spare & Found Parts, was published by Greenwillow Books in October 2016. Her nonfiction has appeared on The Irish Times, The Rumpus, Midnight Breakfast, Guts and Winter Pages and in the emigration-focused collection Not Lost, published by New Island Press in 2013. She was the recipient of the 2016 U Magazine 30 Under 30 Award for Literature. She tweets @griffski.
 
Ciara Kenny is a journalist and editor of the Irish Times Abroad. The project began as Generation Emigration in 2011, in response to the soaring number of people leaving Ireland as the economic crisis deepened. The aim was to provide an editorially controlled platform for people living overseas to share their emigration stories and opinions with readers in Ireland and all over the world. Since then, the project has published thousands of first-person stories and photographs from Irish people living in diverse locations, and thousands more interviews, news stories, galleries and videos. The section expanded to become Irish Times Abroad in November 2016, to reflect the changing nature of Irish migration. See www.irishtimes.com/abroad. 
Justin Carville teaches Historical and Theoretical Studies in Photography and is Chair of the Photography Programme at the Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dun Laoghaire. A former Government of Ireland Senior Research Scholar in the Humanities and Social Sciences and an IRCHSS Government of Ireland Research Fellow, he has guest edited a special Ireland themed issue of The Journal of Popular Visual Culture and an issue of the journal Photographies on the photographic image and globalization. He is the author of Photography and Ireland (Reaktion, 2011) and Visualizing Dublin: Visual Culture, Modernity and the Representation of Urban Space (Peter Lang, 2014).

Mark Curran is an artist researcher & educator. He holds a practice-led PhD, is Lecturer & Year Tutor on the BA (Hons) Photography programme at the Institute of Art, Design & Technology (IADT) & since 2010, is Visiting Professor on the MA in Visual & Media Anthropology, Freie Universität Berlin. In addition, he supervises postgraduate students at IADT undertaking practice-led Masters by Research (MRes.). Incorporating multi- media installation informed by ethnographic understandings, since the late 1990s, Curran has undertaken a cycle of long-term award-winning research projects, critically addressing the predatory context resulting from flows of global capital. These have been widely published & exhibited, including, DePaul Art Museum (DPAM), Chicago (2010), Encontros da Imagem, Braga (2011), Grimmuseum, Berlin (2013), FORMAT, Derby (2013), Gallery of Photography, Dublin (2013), Belfast Exposed (2013), Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris (2014), Noorderlicht, Groningen (2015) & Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto (2016). An extensive mid-career installation titled The Economy of Appearances was presented at Limerick City Gallery of Art (LCGA) in 2015. Recent research presentations include McGill University (2014), Royal Anthropological Institute, London (2015), University of Ljubljana (2015), University of Bern (2015), Boston University (2016) & College Arts Association (CAA) 105th Annual Conference, New York (2017). Installations of his project on the global markets, THE MARKET (2010-), curated by Helen Carey & supported by Arts Council of Ireland, will be included in the forthcoming Athens Biennale and for exhibitions in the USA; France & UK later in 2017 & 2018. A full publication is also planned.
