Dr. ShiPu Wang, Coats Family Chair in the Arts and Professor of Art History at the University of California, Merced, and commissioner of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, returns to J-Sei to talk about the new exhibit he has curated, Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo. This is the first exhibition to present the remarkable art and life stories of three trailblazing Japanese American women of the pre–World War II generation. The display spans eight decades with more than 80 pieces of artwork, including many that have never been shown, revealing not only the range and depth of these artists’ creativity but also a broader picture of the American experience in the 20th century as seen through the eyes of these Japanese American women. The Pictures of Belonging catalogue, co-published by the Japanese American National Museum and the University of California Press, will be available for purchase for $50. A book signing will follow Dr. Wang's presentation.
