Whether you’ve been walking with your refugee friends for years or you’ve never met a refugee and are curious about the many nations in your community, this training is for you!
We’ll have two simultaneous tracks:
REFUGEE 101 (for those new to refugee outreach) based on the training material of Tucson Refugee Ministry:
- The refugee journey and overview of the US refugee-resettlement program
- Overviews of countries from where people are fleeing
- Loss simulation
- Cross-cultural basics and communication tips
- Helping without hurting
- Building bridges to people of other faiths
- Local opportunities to serve
REFUGEE 201 (for current volunteers/practitioners):
Small-group discussions and networking around:
- What an implemented Executive Order would mean from the perspective of the AZ State Refugee Office, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, and a local resettlement agency
- What your outreach to forcibly displaced people would look like post-Executive Order
- How to leverage the current heightened awareness of refugees to
- Locate and minister to asylum seekers
- Partner with immigrant/refugee pastors and congregations
- Work closely with schools and health providers to meet the needs of internationals
- Expand services to former refugees who are still struggling to integrate
