Description

Whether you’ve been walking with your refugee friends for years or you’ve never met a refugee and are curious about the many nations in your community, this training is for you!

We’ll have two simultaneous tracks:

REFUGEE 101 (for those new to refugee outreach) based on the training material of Tucson Refugee Ministry:

  • The refugee journey and overview of the US refugee-resettlement program
  • Overviews of countries from where people are fleeing
  • Loss simulation
  • Cross-cultural basics and communication tips
  • Helping without hurting
  • Building bridges to people of other faiths
  • Local opportunities to serve

REFUGEE 201 (for current volunteers/practitioners):

Small-group discussions and networking around:

  • What an implemented Executive Order would mean from the perspective of the AZ State Refugee Office, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, and a local resettlement agency
  • What your outreach to forcibly displaced people would look like post-Executive Order
  • How to leverage the current heightened awareness of refugees to
    • Locate and minister to asylum seekers
    • Partner with immigrant/refugee pastors and congregations
    • Work closely with schools and health providers to meet the needs of internationals
    • Expand services to former refugees who are still struggling to integrate
If you have a burning desire to discuss and learn about something specific, let us know!
