What’s on the Menu:

  • Freestyle Vegetable Summer Rolls
  • As-You-Like-It Savory Pancakes
  • Scrap Chili Oil
  • Peanut Butter Jar Nut Butter Sauce

Here are phrases you don’t see in recipes very often: “Scraps and bits.” “A few lonely vegetables.” “Mix-and-match.” But in “Perfectly Good Food: A Totally Achievable Zero-Waste Approach to Home Cooking,” (use code MILK2024 for 10% off your order) sisters Irene and Mei Li use those terms with abandon. Why? Because that’s how real day-to-day home cooking happens: by employing smart techniques to transform the contents of your fridge and pantry into great meals. When you cook the way they do—with an open mind, trust in your senses and a few kitchen organization hacks—you can truly become a zero-waste cook. Join Irene and Mei for a livestream class where you’ll strengthen your zero-waste cooking muscles as you make four delicious recipes.

First, their Savory Pancakes call for nearly any combination of shredded raw or cooked vegetables, plus a handful of “anything pickled.” Served alongside a homemade okonomiyaki sauce that requires nothing more than the four most common condiments in the American kitchen, this is dinner in minutes. Want to make something even more impressive without an extra trip to the grocery store? Whip up a batch of crunchy, refreshing and vegetable-forward Summer Rolls. As long as you stick—more or less—to their suggested ratios, you’ll have a delicious dish that’s different every time you make it. It’s even better served up with what Irene and Mei call Scrap Chili Oil, which simmers allium scraps—like bits and bobs of onions, clean scallion roots and garlic peels—in oil with spices and chilies to make the best chili oil you’ve ever tasted. And don’t toss that empty peanut butter jar: their favorite dipping sauce for summer rolls is shaken up right in the jar, meaning you don’t throw away even a drop of the good stuff.

About Irene and Mei: Margaret and Irene Li are the co-authors of "Perfectly Good Food: A Totally Achievable Zero Waste Approach to Home Cooking" (use code MILK2024 for 10% off your order) and "Double Awesome Chinese Food."
