Percussion Knapping Workshop
Join expert knapper, Gary Pickett as he guides a hands-on workshop into the ancient art of percussion knapping.
What is knapping you ask? Well, have you ever seen a carved arrowhead? If you answred yes then you've most likely seen a primitive tool made by knapping.
Percussion knapping is an ancient, fundamental technique for shaping stone such as flint, chert, or obsidian by striking it with a hammerstone, antler, or copper billet to remove flakes. This lithic reduction process creates sharp-edged tools, projectile points, or weapons. It is primarily divided into hard hammer (using stone) and soft hammer (using antler/wood) methods to refine tool shapes
Gary will provide hands-on techniques allowing all participants an opportunity to try knapping their own arrowheads.
