This 24-contact hour course will give students hands-on skills in person for pediatric herbal health to include: foundation assessment skills, case study evaluations, a pediatric materia medica and medicine making several formulas that are specific to pediatric care.


Pre-Requisites: Pediatric Herbalism is recommended but not required.


The journey to practicing in a community and helping younger clients includes physical exam skills that are unique to children and adolescents. This 3-day course teaches assessment skills with volunteer fully-clothed youth, to give herbalists an opportunity to become familiar with doing an herbalism-focused clinical visit. Become familiar with what equipment makes the visit easiest and how to a pediatric health history, evaluate several case studies to hone your skills and then spend some time on Day 3 making pediatric formulas from your age-specific materia medica that you will take home with you!


This course will cover:

1. Learn how to use basic physical assessment equipment. Sphygmomanometer and Stethoscope, otoscope/ophthamaloscope, eye chart, percussion hammer, infrared thermometer, adult scale, penlight.

2. Demonstrate a set of skills of Physical Assessment for the Herbalist appropriate for children (pulse, respirations, temperature, taking a history, observational skills practice)

3. Learn to use physical assessments as a baseline and later as an evaluation tool for determining changes in conditions.

3. Recognize the basic, common herbs used for Children’s Health Issues – a set materia medica for this workshop.

4. Demonstrate how to use the materia medica to create a better individualized formula after completing a physical assessment and history.

5. Evaluate a case to determine if physical assessment is needed and to what extent.

6. Prepare an appropriate herbal formula based on child and guardian’s descriptions of their issues, by physical assessment, asking questions regarding their history, using available herbs.

7. Students will make two formulations from the workshop’s herbs that focuses on ingredients, dosage and medicine making technique.


*Note: We will not be doing any internal exams. All assessment will be done fully clothed on volunteer children and young adults. Skills of physical assessment will be performed: inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. (olfaction will not be covered in this course).

**Students are encouraged to bring their own set of equipment. Students are required to bring their own examination gloves. Basic assessment kits will be available for sale and can be ordered in advance.

***A basic equipment list will go out prior to the course for students who want to bring their own supplies. This course is open to all levels of herbalism, has no pre-requisites, and has 16 open spots!

Lodging: Camping on-site is available for registered students during this course. (Spots are limited and first come first serve.) There are also camping, hotel, RV park, and Airbnb options within the 87571 zip-code for students to choose from.
