Peacemaking Circles:  How to Lead a Transformative, Community-Building Practice

This 16-hour training provides an introduction to leading Peacemaking Circles, a unique community-building and dialogue format that originated among North American Indigenous communities. Circles invite participants to co-create a brave and structured space for talking about our lived experiences––from the mundane, to the challenging, to the tragic. Circles, given their particular norms, balance listening and speaking; belonging and autonomy; the emotional and the intellectual; as well as equality and responsibility. Circles aim to disrupt the power dynamics and hierarchical ways of relating that have been so normative in our society. In Circle, we share to be known and listen to know; and, in so doing, uncover insight and wisdom that we could not access apart from the group. This powerful practice has transformed groups into teams, hurt into healing, ignorance into insight, and conflict into connection.Circle is a profoundly democratic practice; yet, to be true to the practice&#x27;s origins and spirit, training is necessary. Circle Keepers, as facilitators of Circles are called, must learn about the philosophical underpinnings of Circle, related Indigenous beliefs and worldview assumptions, and the mechanisms of how Circles work. They must also build stamina for keeping Circles and holding space, by sitting in Circle themselves and becoming astute observers of group dynamics. Through this training, participants will learn these skills in order to be able to keep a basic Peacemaking Circle. <h2>Schedule</h2>The Peacemaking Circle Training will be facilitated by <a href="https://perception.org/staff/jason-craige-harris/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jason Craige Harris</a> <a href="https://perception.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a> and <a href="https://yphconsultingllc.com/person/yolonda-p-harrison/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Yolonda P. Harrison</a> over an eight-week period.
