The Indeterminacy Festival

A two-day finale performance on May 17th and 18th at <A HREF="https://penndixie.org" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Preserve</A> to close out a week of workshops, events, and screeening around the theme of PASTFUTURE/FUTUREPAST.
ABOUT THIS EVENT:
This performance will take us into our cosmic past in order to help us make sense of our present and future. We will watch as dancers enact planetary rotations, evoking the music of spheres as they orbit the sun. Transforming from planets into black holes, dancers will wield parachutes in the style of chinese dragons as these giant masses dance in relation to each other, eventually colliding together, generating a ripple in the fabric of spacetime, which we then detect, billions of years later, in the form of the recently discovered phenomenon of gravitational waves. Waves will then get explored further with the use of LED wristbands and spools of cord to conjure up different kinds of patterns inspired by the electromagnetic spectrum. In the final act, messages will be sent out to interstellar space, as this cast of communicators will have the opportunity to transmit what they deem to be most important about life here on earth.
Dancers include thirty students from Buffalo String Works who have been learning movement patterns over the past several months and will join the larger cast of dancers from The University at Buffalo, local community, and Parkinson Dance Ensemble performing in concert with a large cast of musicians and original instruments playing a score created specifically for the festival.
*It should be noted that these performances will take place from 8:30-10pm. The event is not an installation, but a guided performance, and as such, does not accommodate late arrival.*
Friday ticket includes entry into pre-event cocktail party at <A HREF="https://www.eatatbedrock.com" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Bedrock Cafe</A>.
Saturday ticket includes entry into the post-event party at The Bedrock with cast & crew. 
Weekend Past includes everything. 
 
GENERAL OVERVIEW: 
<A HREF="http://www.indeterminacyfestival.com" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Indeterminacy Festival</A>, now entering its third year, will culminate with this festival weekend hosted at <A HREF="https://penndixie.org" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Preserve</A>, the grounds of which look very much like the lunar surface. Fossils from 380 million years ago can be found everywhere. This setting will be the stage for this year's festival, focusing on our historical, present, and future communication with the universe, in the form of the various eras of geologic time and ways in which gravitational and electromagnetic waves serve as communicators between the past, present, and future.
Musicians, choreographers, and dancers have spent the year learning about sound, electromagnetic, and gravitational waves and developed strategies to perform these waves as music and movement. In the parallel to this process, they also learned about previous attempts at interstellar communication with the universe via the Golden Record and Arecibo Message and then created their own original messages.
<A HREF="https://www.indeterminacyfestival.com/community-involvement" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The festival collaborates with a diverse number of participants of all ages</A>, both professionals and non-professionals, drawing together individuals from across the arts, sciences, architecture, engineering, this year including members of the UB Nanosatellite Laboratory, along with a number of community organizations throughout the city, including dancers with Parkinson's, Buffalo String Works, Starlight Studios, 5 Loaves Farm, Our Lady of Hope Youth Choir, The Indeterminacy Ensemble, and the newly formed Monochord Quartet. 
These perfromances will bring together over sixty collaborators to enact PastFuture/FuturePast.
