Paste Paper

Paste Paper

Overview

A decorative paper technique.

Paste Paper has been a method for creating decorative papers since the 16th century and is still used by artists today. In the past it was primarily used as end pages or covers on books. It was sometimes referred to as the poor man's paper marbling. Today, it is still used for books as well as many other things, sometimes standing alone as a piece of art.

As stunning as some pieces are, basic materials and and techniques are relatively simple. You cook water and flour (or some other starch) to make a paste, add pigment, paint it on paper and then create designs using your finger, stamps, brushes, combs, sponges or anything else you want to try.

We'll cook up at least to batches of paste using different starches, then participants can choose what paste they want to use and add pigment to the paste. if you want to do two colors you can trade with each other and experiment. We will have a basic paper that everyone will use, but we will have samples of various other papers for you to experiment with if there is time.

We are offering a workshop on making a Commonplace Book on Sunday and you can use the paper you designed as the cover for your Common Place Book.

All materials are provided, but you can bring things you might want to experiment with.

The class is designed for people ages 14 and up. If you have a younger child you think might enjoy this they may accompany you, but you are responsible for their supervision.

Class is limited to 10 participants. registration fee is $45.
