Paper Thread

Paper Thread

The Art AnnexPawtucket, RI
Saturday, Feb 28 from 1 pm to 4 pm EST
Overview

Back by popular demand! Learn how to make paper thread using hanji and a drop spindle.

We will start with a sheet of hanji (handmade Korean paper) that is folded, cut, then manipulated and handspun into a one-ply thread. This contemporary method, developed by Aimee Lee, is rooted in Korean and Japanese traditions.

All skill levels welcome and most supplies will be provided, including x-acto knives, cutting mats, spray bottles, and hanji sheets provided by Paper Connection. We will have drop spindles available, but recommend bringing your own. If you have time to purchase before the class, this is our recommendation: https://woolery.com/products/louet-octo-drop-spindle

Please bring your patience and openness to failure being part of the learning process!

If you have any questions, please write to paperconnection1@gmail.com or call us Monday - Thursday (401)454-1436.

About the instructor:

Justine Chang is a Korean American artist based in Providence, RI. Her recent work explores photographic prints on hanji—blending the tradition of Korean handmade paper with images that evoke themes of erasure, memory, grief and exuberance. She finds meaning in creating spaces for conversation and collective labor in ways that are connected to her heritage. She holds a BFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design.
