Overproduction and fast fashion are one of the biggest CO2 drivers in the global world. According to Greenpeace, a quarter of the clothes produced are not sold, clothes that have already been bought are often thrown away unworn, while only about 1(!) percent of the clothes are recycled.In the European Union, each person throws away 11 kilos of textiles per year!Through upcycling techniques and processes, products are redesigned without generating any further waste. Used textiles are upgraded or repurposed, scraps from industrial overproduction and discarded fabrics and cuts from the previous season are used for new designs. This results in exclusive and unique creations that are often handmade.In this panel talk we will talk about creation processes, circularity, building a business from upcycling, and the future of fashion.We will have the chance to know the stories behind upcycling brands that have been running for several years in Berlin. We will discover their idea of upcycling, their processes, their vision of the future of fashion, but also their struggles and their recommendation for other creators. We will also have two start-ups related to upcycling and circular fashion, from whom we will learn more about circular system and the use of technology to create bigger impact and scale our businesses.What can upcycling offer for the changes we need to happen in the consumtion system? What are the lessons learnt by the people working in the field since many years? What do new entrepreneurs face today?
